They’re covered in pencil marks, crossings-out, fingerings, little rhythmic fixes, dynamic reminders. That’s a good sign. It means the music’s been wrestled with.
When a score is perfectly clean, that usually tells me one thing: it was printed, but never really lived with. It hasn’t been practiced, shaped, or explored yet.
